Community Consultation
Portlands Energy Centre (PEC) has been firmly
committed to consultation with the local community and stakeholders since
day-one back in 2002. PEC will continue to take this approach, meeting with
stakeholders on an ongoing basis to encourage dialogue and provide information
as the facility is built and once it is up and running.
Starting in
December 2002, a formal consultation process was launched to inform community
groups and other stakeholders about the proposed facility and get their input.
Open Houses in 2003 and 2004 helped us introduce the project, the Environmental
Assessment (EA) process and public consultation process to the community. In
addition, we met locally and at City Hall with a number of community groups,
including the South Riverdale Environmental Liaison Committee. We also met many
times with various federal, provincial and municipal government agencies,
including the City of Toronto, the Ontario Ministry of Environment and the
Canadian Coast Guard.
The entire EA process lasted over two years. The
Ontario Ministry of Environment confirmed in March 2005 that the project could
proceed.
Community Liaison Committee
A key part of our promise to be a valued
member of the community will be our community liaison committee. This group
will meet regularly and be created and run by an independent facilitator. The
committee will ensure that there is ongoing discussion between the plant's
management and the community. The Community News section of this website will
keep you posted of upcoming CLC meetings and events. Meeting minutes will be
archived in the Docs & Info section of the site.
