What They're saying about us...

  • "As a leading city of the world, it is important for Toronto to have power generation located in the downtown core," said Rob McLeese, Chair of the Toronto Board of Trade Electricity Task Force.

  • "The Portlands power project must move ahead as soon as possible. It will reduce air pollution in Toronto and it will dramatically increase the security and reliability of Toronto's electricity system," said Jack Gibbons, Chair, Ontario Clean Air Alliance.

  • Chuck Stradling, Executive Vice President, Building Owners and Managers Association of the Greater Toronto Area (BOMA"There were concerns among the development and business community that the lack of a reliable supply of power would be a major factor in new commercial projects moving off the planning board. The announcement that PEC would move forward has given at least three developers of commercial projects the confidence they needed to start construction," he said.

Community Consultation

Portlands Energy Centre (PEC) has been firmly committed to consultation with the local community and stakeholders since day-one back in 2002. PEC will continue to take this approach, meeting with stakeholders on an ongoing basis to encourage dialogue and provide information as the facility is built and once it is up and running.

Starting in December 2002, a formal consultation process was launched to inform community groups and other stakeholders about the proposed facility and get their input. Open Houses in 2003 and 2004 helped us introduce the project, the Environmental Assessment (EA) process and public consultation process to the community. In addition, we met locally and at City Hall with a number of community groups, including the South Riverdale Environmental Liaison Committee. We also met many times with various federal, provincial and municipal government agencies, including the City of Toronto, the Ontario Ministry of Environment and the Canadian Coast Guard.

The entire EA process lasted over two years. The Ontario Ministry of Environment confirmed in March 2005 that the project could proceed.

Community Liaison Committee

A key part of our promise to be a valued member of the community will be our community liaison committee. This group will meet regularly and be created and run by an independent facilitator. The committee will ensure that there is ongoing discussion between the plant's management and the community. The Community News section of this website will keep you posted of upcoming CLC meetings and events. Meeting minutes will be archived in the Docs & Info section of the site.
