Community
The Portlands Energy Centre believes that investing in
the community where we live and work will enhance the quality of life. It's not
only good business. It is also simply the right thing to do.
We are making a difference by supporting:
- Community health and safety programs
- Environmental and conservation programs
- Arts and culture
- Humanitarian projects
- Youth amateur sports initiatives
Our employees also contribute as members of local
organizations, by participating in community events, and volunteering their
time for numerous worthy causes.
Commitment to the Environment
The Portlands Energy Centre (PEC) utilizes effective
environmental controls to minimize emissions, noise and other environmental
impacts.
PEC uses modern "dry-low" nitrogen-oxide technology
which, states Environment Canada, is reliable, well developed and proven to
have very low nitrogen-oxide emission rates.
PEC's noise emissions will be below the provincial and
municipal noise standards measured at the nearest receptors (Morse Street and
Outer Harbour Marina). What this means is that the noise a few hundred metres
away will be about the same level as leaves rustling in the wind.
The Portlands Energy Centre is situated on 12 hectares
of which 11 hectares will be landscaped consistent with Lake Ontario Park's
vision to regenerate the Port lands area. Our comprehensive landscape plan has
incorporated more than 3,000 indigenous trees and shrubs.
Habitats were created for native and migratory
wildlife to prosper throughout our grasslands and marshland areas. In summary,
the Portlands Energy Centre commitment to the environment is to:
- recognize that the people of Toronto have a genuine
regard for the environment and have the right to expect PEC will respect their
concerns in this regard;
- meet the requirements of all applicable
environmental laws, regulations and permit requirements and to verify this
commitment through environmental auditing and performance measurement;
- support energy-efficiency, recycle and renewable
programs and encourage resource conservation;
- educate our employees and contractors so that they
each know their environmental responsibilities and share the PEC's commitment
to the environment;
- regularly measure environmental performance and
share the results of those measurements with our employees, stakeholders and
the public, recognizing our unique position as an electrical generating plant
in the city of Toronto.
